In 2011, the city of Los Angeles ended the enforcement of red-light cameras. Several cities such as Fullerton, Costa Mesa, and Irvine have also banned red-light traffic cameras in subsequent years.
Studies show a 24% decrease in crash rates in intersections that enforce traffic cameras, but the collision rate in Anaheim dropped 29% without traffic cameras.
Some data even suggests an increase in rear-end accidents because drivers slam on their brakes once they notice these cameras.
The National Motorists Association emphasize that red light cameras do not prevent intersection accidents because people do not casually run red lights. It is because people are distracted or unaware of their surroundings.
These cameras are money-making tools that do not necessarily increase traffic safety.
