Unpaid internships are unfair, elitist, and send a message that what this young person is doing has no value. In an age of rising costs of higher education, many young people cannot afford to take an unpaid internship; therefore, these opportunities traditionally go to the privileged class. The federal government must lead the way in mentoring the next generation of all economic backgrounds and demonstrating their value.
