As of 2010, more than 80% of the nation lived in urban areas. This meditates a change in our national thinking on cities. The first step of this shift is the elimination of the DoT and HUD, and the creation of a new agency responsible for all our nation’s federal investment in the built environment; the goal of this agency being to reinforce the existing urban fabric of our nation’s metro regions and to promote the development of communities that support sustainability and equity. The next step is to work to reduce our nation’s dependence on automobiles, through increased investments in inter- and intra-urban transportation as reasonable alternatives to auto usage. Finally, the government must commit to funding initiatives to complete these goals. This wonderful nation deserves as much.
