The goal of true marriage equality will never be achieved until American citizens are able to marry their long-time partners abroad. The United Kingdom enabled its citizens to wed their foreign partners in embassies around the world; now it is America's turn.
Many of us are in committed relationships in countries where same-sex marriage does not exist or is unlikely to exist in the near future. Moreover, coming to the United States to wed an American is not always an option for foreign-born partners.
Marriage affords gay and lesbian couples a legitimacy and dignity even in countries where same-sex marriage is unavailable. It also enables spouses to declare themselves as a married couple when travelling internationally.
