ENABLE TAXPAYERS TO DIRECT TAX PAYMENTS AWAY FROM GOVERNMENT ACTIVITIES THAT CONTRADICT THEIR MORAL/RELIGIOUS BELIEFS

Created by W.M. on March 29, 2013

As a general principle, government does not have the right to force citizens to act against their moral/religious beliefs. We recognize, for example, conscientious objection to military service. Similarly, taxpayers should not be forced to support, with their tax payments, government activities that contradict their beliefs, but should be able to direct that their individual taxes be spent elsewhere instead. This principle transcends sect or party: many Catholics, for example, cannot in good conscience support family planning, while Quakers similarly cannot support war. Therefore, we the undersigned petition the Administration, in keeping with our 1st Amendment religious freedoms, to order the IRS and OMB to design & implement the processes & forms needed to make such redirection possible.
