With the advent of Puerto Rico voting to apply for statehood within the United States, We the People undersigned hereby declare and emphasize our discord with the United States Government not having officialized our American English language. Currently, the territory Puerto Rico is fully able to become a state while having 81% of people over the age of five (5) understanding English "less than very well" (U.S. Census Bureau, 2006)
English has always been both the traditional and cultural language of the United States - one we can all identify with. We believe that American English ought to be declared this nation's formal language in an effort to not only preserve our American culture, but to promote it within our borders and prevent foreign culture and language dividing our great nation.
