We The People incarcerate more members of our society, per capita, than any other country in the world. The incarcerated population of the United States has risen nearly 400% in the last forty years. This is not because crime has been increasing. In fact, crime has been declining, though not as fast as the rate of incarceration has been rising. The numbers don't add up...
That is, until you consider that the corrections industry in the United States is generating tens of billions of dollars a year by operating private prisons, and by selling products and services to prisoners and their families.
Let's stop this runaway train by limiting the mark-ups these companies are allowed to charge. In so doing, perhaps we can limit their lobbying efforts and help reform our criminal justice system.
