Medicare and other policies do not cover one of the critical components of lymphedema treatment, the medically necessary compression supplies used daily in lymphedema treatment. As a result, many cancer patients suffer from recurrent infections, progressive degradation in their condition and eventual disability because they cannot afford the compression supplies required to maintain their condition.
WHY NOT? Because compression garments DO NOT MEET the definition of durable medical equipment or any other Medicare benefit CATEGORY established by law. Off-the-shelf compression sleeves cost up to $80 each and must be replaced every few months. Many need custom fit garments which run into hundreds of dollars each. THIS SITUATION IS NOT ACCEPTABLE JUST BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF "CATEGORY!" Thx!
