In a continuous effort to reduce discrimination and lower barriers to higher education in our country, the question of race and ethnicity is one that should be left outside of our education systems. Although this question is often considered "optional" on applications, colleges and universities across the country send a much different message--one that is dividing new generations and preventing a true celebration of diversity in our country. Race and ethnicity should never be considered a barrier: they should be motivating factors and personal histories. Even with the many laws promoting diversity among our young citizens, race is still a defining entrance "requirement" in some institutes of higher education. Why define our citizens by a single word?
