In honor of the late Beau Biden, Senator Ted Kennedy, and the more than 15,000 annual victims of brain cancer in the US, Congress should increase funding for brain cancer research at the National Institutes of Health and other institutions. According to the NIH, nearly 23,000 Americans are diagnosed with brain cancer every year, and the 5 year survival rate is only 33%. More than 40 years after the US declared war on cancer, this disease is still poorly understood. Increasing funding for brain cancer research will preserve the global leadership of the NIH, and according to the American Society of Clinical Oncology, every $1 spent on the NIH generates $2.21 in economic activity. In addition to action by Congress, the Obama administration should designate any funds possible to this cause.
