We the People demand a Law (with fines and penalties) prohibiting food services from waste, insisting it go to local food banks.
2014, 46.7 (14.8%) of Americans lived in poverty and
48.1 million Americans lived in food insecure households.
30-40% of the food supply is wasted, more than 20 lbs. of food per person per month.
Over 97% of food waste ends up in the landfill.
2010: 34 million tons of food wasted (enough to fill the Empire State Building 91 times) with 31% of the food supply was uneaten at the retail and consumer levels
1/4 of the food wasted would provide three meals per day for 43 million people.
Food waste in the landfill breaks down and produces methane which is 21 times more potent than CO2.
Each ton wasted becomes 3.8 tons of greenhouse gas
emissions.
