We are the only first world country that doesn't offer mandatory paid maternity/paternity leave to new parents. Currently, most women and men have to exhaust their own sick time in order to be paid through their employer so they can stay home with their baby, or they have to pay for a separate insurance policy a year ahead of a confirmed pregnancy to benefit from payments.
Because of this, parents are pressured to return to work as soon as possible, sacrificing important, developmental time with their new children, as well as benefits such as extended breastfeeding. Please don't make our new parents choose between their child and their paycheck.
