It is time for those who run this Country to share the burden of cutting our national debt. This petition would secure that our federal legislature is paid a fair wage that is flexible and sensible. The path to the U.S. Congress should not be based on salary and the powerful connections one can make, but to serve your Country and do what is best for all.
According to the national wage index, the average salary in 2011 was $42,979.61 which, according to this measure, would result in a salary of $85,959.22 for a U.S congressmen. The base salary of a U.S. legislator is $174,000 a year. The difference in salaries for all 535 members of congress the saving would be $47,101,817.30. The increases in salary for leadership should remain but be fitting to this new pay scale.
