Today, with modern technology, rapes that have occurred many years ago can be solved through DNA testing. Unfortunately, in many states, the perpetrators of these heinous crimes walk away because of a statute of limitations. Some states even have funding shortages that prevent rape kits from being tested. This has resulted in 1,000s of rape kits to go untested for many years; and consequently hundreds of rapists have walked free. While some states have taken measures to remedy the situation, the vast majority of states in our nation still have not done so. We call on President Obama to sponsor and enact legislation that abolishes all statutes of limitations for sexual assaults across the nation for all past and future crimes and ensures that all rape kits are tested.
