The drug, available for 63 years, which costs approximately $1 per pill to make was being marketed for approximately $13 per pill. Once Shkreli obtained rights to the drug, he increased the price 5000%. The medication is used to treat toxoplasmosis, a protozoal disease affecting pregnant women and people with immune deficiencies. It is also used to treat malaria. This is just the latest example of price gouging, but also an important one. There needs to be regulation of pharmaceutical companies to provide needed medication that everyone can afford.
