Enact legislation that will force the FDA to regulate the use of antibiotics in food-producing livestock more strictly

Antibiotic resistance has been called a "serious threat to global public health" by WHO, yet our government has failed to preserve the use of medically necessary antibiotics. Almost 80% of the antibiotics sold in the US are given to livestock and used as growth promoters. Since 1977, the FDA recognized that resistance could be spread from food-producing animals to humans, yet today the FDA only recommends that farmers stop using medically necessary antibiotics as growth promoters.Many experts believe the FDA must be more strict, yet little legislation has been passed due to the excessive lobbying by the meat, pharmaceutical, and agricultural industries. We must be active so that future generations don't live in a world without antibiotics and all the medical achievements they have enabled.
