Our energy use and proliferation from fossil fuels has reached unprecedented levels. Our dependence on coal not only destroys the environment via coal plant emissions, but also with foreign oil that is used for the extraction and transportation of the coal. We call on the Obama administration to enact a national building code requiring new structures to be built with a minimum percentage of a self-contained renewable energy source. Residential structures shall be equipped with a renewable source (e.g. Solar, Wind, Thermal) of energy no less than fifty percent of expected energy use equivalent to nearby residential structures. All commercial buildings shall be built with a renewable source equivalent in capacity to ninety percent solar panel coverage of the structure's available roof area.
