We ask that our government restrict welfare benefits (cash, medicaid, food stamps) to being provided for only one child per family and that an adult may receive no more than 5 years of low-income government assistance in their lifetime. Federal welfare spending in fiscal year 2011 totaled $668 billion, spread out over 126 programs, while the poverty rate that remains high at 15.1 percent, roughly where it was in 1965. There is little evidence that state assistance helps people leave the ranks of poverty, rather is tends to keep them and future generations there as they are dependent on aid and do not seek self-sufficiency.
