As a current 5th year pharmacy student at St. John’s University, my colleagues often comment on how certain prices of drugs at their jobs keep increasing. The most recent example of this is the drastic price increase of the drug Daraprim from $18 to $750. Drug companies say that the reason they have price increases on existing drugs is to help fund the discovery of new therapies, however; most of their profits are going to marketing and administration- not to the development of new, safer drugs. This leaves patients with a massive financial burden. There are little to no regulations present that control drug pricing. This needs to change. There should be regulations that restrict the rate of price increases for drugs currently on the market.
