The current nominal two party system in the US encourages those running to radicalize their positions to appeal to a larger electoral base. This has pushed more and more aggressive positions into acceptance, much to the detriment of the nation as a whole.
A possible solution would be reforming the voting system into a single transferable voting system, sometimes known as choice voting. This would allow us, the public, to have representation that accurately reflects our desires and views, rather than the increasingly polarized system.
This voting system allows you to rank those running for office in the order you prefer them. Those who get the least votes are removed, and all those who voted for them have their votes moved to their second choice. This process repeats until seats are filled.
