The 2nd Amendment was written with regard to a different level of technology in a differently structured society. Today, the military and police are so much better armed than the citizenry that the "Sic Semper Tyrannis" motive for gun ownership is moot and irrelevant. Privately owned guns pose only a danger to other private citizens and regulations do nothing to stem the flow of weapons into the hands of wrongdoers. It's time that we mature as a society and recognize that we should limit the rights to bear arms to only firearms that may have a practical application, not those designed to efficiently kill many human targets in a short period of time. By limiting the right to bear arms to bolt-action rifles and break action shotguns, hunters may still hunt, but tragedy will be avoided.
