Nuclear power is (even now) incredibly clean, reliable and stable as a baseline energy source for our nation's electricity needs. Wind and solar suffer from very poor stability and reliability in most areas and contribute to a lot of pollution in production, tidal and wave power suffer from regional availability and immature technology problems, hydropower causes enough environmental impact that dams are being breached rather than built, and fossil fuel requires lots of foreign dependance and pollutes the environment.
If we built nuclear up to sustain a majority of our nations baseline energy needs and encouraged breeder reactor tech and fuel recycling tech, then we could massively cut our pollution and reliance on foreign energy.
All this with fewer deaths per year, by any measure.
