A cursory review of the current petitions on this website makes it abundantly clear that many in the United States are lacking a fundamental understanding of the causes and consequences of the U.S. Civil War, as well as--perhaps--rudimentary knowledge of the role of government (such as, for example, the fact that it might behoove the residents of any states petitioning for secession to first determine whether those in the state-level government are prepared to take on the responsibilities that would come therewith.
For this reason, I therefore petition the Obama Administration to encourage the Department of Education to step up efforts in these critical academic areas.
