Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death, causing more than 440,000 deaths in the US and six million worldwide annually. Smoking causes 90% of lung cancers, the leading cause of cancer death in women and men and one-third of all cardiovascular disease deaths; moreover, one-half of smokers die prematurely if they don't stop. Tobacco companies have used flue curing, genetic engineering and/or additives to lower the pH of tobacco and ionize nicotine in the lungs, so that more is absorbed in the large surface area of lung capillaries. The Family Smoking Prevention & Tobacco Control Act of 2009 gave the FDA regulatory authority for the manufacture and sale of all tobacco products. If FDA bars sale of tobacco with pH < 8, there will be less inhaling and less lung cancer.
