It should be a federal law in the United States that companies are required to provide at least one year of paid leave for pregnancy or care of a newborn child to one or both parents at 80 to 100% of their pay. The current federal requirements under the Family Medical Leave Act of 1993 only guarantee 12 weeks of UNPAID leave for pregnancy or care of a newborn child. Almost every country in the world has paid maternity leave of at least 10 weeks, this including most third world countries. Many countries, including England, Sweden, and Norway, require paid maternity leave for at least one year at nearly full pay. Studies show that both mom and child are healthier in the long run if ample time is given to transition back into the workforce.
