I have heard many concerns and excuses for years regarding this issue. The single one answer has always been made available if not had the opportunity to advance personal security including the economy (technology). The answer has always been non lethal weapons. Any sane person prefers protection that addresses their needs but nothing more. There are and has been common sense measures already available like changes in lifestyles, armament, etc., for example:
*Lifestyles:
Lessons from mental health on how lifestyles (chosen) determine your need for external protections,
* Weapon:
If chosen, there are non lethal options available way more less expensive than purchasing guns. Like:
-Stun propelled stun guns
-Rubber projectiles (non lethal)
-Dogs, motion light sensors, etc.
