Encourage Pharmacist to play a bigger role in providing Immunization services to patients in community pharmacy

Created by S.V. on March 21, 2013

Influenza and pneumonia are the fifth leading cause of death in Americans. Most of the adults in united states are not effectively vaccinated against influenza, pneumococcal, hepatitis B and tetanus. As a health care provider pharmacist plays an important and growing role in delivering and administering these vaccines to the patients. "Studies have shown that pharmacist -provided immunization services increases the overall immunization rates". Pharmacist can administer flu vaccines in all 50 states, but still the scope of practice is limited due to the state and federal regulations. Pharmacist should play a much bigger role in the immunization services rather than administering only flu vaccines. Laws and regulations should be amended to increase the scope of practice.
