Since William Howard Taft's exit from the presidency in January 1913, no American President has worn a beard, and facial hair has been mostly out of fashion.
However, times are changing. Many Americans, young and old, rich and poor, and of every ethnic and religious background are beginning to grow out their facial hair. This can be seen in Hollywood, through actors such as Brad Pitt and Samuel Jackson, whose decision to have a beard reflects the fashion choices of many Americans.
By ending his presidency with a beard, President Obama would be more closely connected to the average American and also be able to end his presidency in style. As the first president to have facial hair in 102 years, the Obama legacy would be a mature and unforgettable one, and a change we can believe in.
