Florida statue 1009.286, the excess hour surcharge law, requires students in Florida State universities to pay double the tuition after exceeding the required amount of credits for their major by a mere 10%; the equivalent of no more than 4 extra classes of interest. This prevents and discourages many students from pursuing minors or extra classes to build upon their educational foundation; a situation which hinders the students' career prospects as well as their capabilities when performing their jobs. College education is expensive and with a double-priced tuition cost, students who may need to take prerequisites before taking their major courses are being targeted. A more lenient stance would be to charge students for excess hours exceeding 120% of their major's credit requirement.
