The InSite injection clinic has been operating in Vancouver BC since 2003.
We are ten years behind Canada with regards to drug treatment.
InSite has had more than one million injections on site of which there were no deaths from overdose. Levels of HIV have gone down within the community, and InSite acts as a mediator between drug use and drug treatment. In 2011 alone nearly five thousand referrals for treatment were made.
Their success is due to the rehabilitation facility located directly above the clinic. Users are given access to clean, medical grade equipment, ensuring they don't contract HIV, hepatitis, or other communicable diseases which would increase their dependence on welfare programs.
The program encourages rehabilitation through regular human contact and sound medical advice.
