We encourage Obama to learn that Iceland is not part of Norway, Iceland wasn't part of Norway then either, and Icelanders at that point in time wanted even less to be part of Norway than your average Icelander today. So writing a proclamation for Leif Erikson Day mentioning only briefly at the beginning that he was Icelandic and spending the rest of the proclamation praising Norway makes about as much sense as Spain heralding George Washington's birthday with a proclamation to praise their relationship with the British.
Just a warning: in case he decides to declare a day honoring Sweden, make sure not to praise them for their contributions of watches, chocolates and little army knives.
