End the 20-year ban on effective public health research into gun violence in this country

In 1996, in response to NRA pressure, the Dickey Amendment was passed by Congress and is re-enacted in HHS appropriations every year. This law cuts federal funding into public health research on gun deaths and injuries, and prohibits the CDC from funding any research that appears to “advocate or promote gun control.” Public health researchers study deaths and injuries from the objects we use in daily life -- their job is to make appropriate recommendations to decrease deaths and injuries. This works for cars, children's toys, appliances, etc. But a scientist faces a vague and constant threat of breaking federal law just for using federal money to study injuries and deaths from guns. Ask Congress to stop suppressing scientific research into facts that the NRA does not want us to know!
