Billions of dollars each year are spent subsidizing agricultural products, many in the U.S. and some abroad.
For example, the US is subsidizing Brazilian cotton growers to avoid trade sanctions agaisnt the US because we already subsidize US cotton growers in violation of international trade agreements.
We subsidize sugar to the tune of over two billion dollars a year and corn to be distilled into high fructose syrup almost as much. These subsidies do not noticeably reduce the market price of food to consumers, but do enrich large agribusiness and contribute to the national problem of obesity.
In a time of great pressure to reduce federal spending, we should spend our money on other things than enriching agribusinesses, angering our trading partners, and making Americans less healthy.
