As a matter of tradition, around thirty percent of ambassadorial posts are given to the President's top donors. These donors receive posts in desirable European capitals or the Caribbean while career diplomats take the lead in more politically sensitive or dangerous locations. This practice needs to stop. Important foreign affairs positions should not be for sale. Save those positions for hardworking and competent foreign service officers with real skills in diplomacy.
