Since 1983 the FDA has implemented a ban on men who have sex with men from donating blood. Since this time there have been advancements on blood testing that can catch the virus days after infection. Since the blood is vigorously tested this should not be an issue.
According to the CDC, 15.8% of people are unaware that they are infected with HIV. If ending the ban on MSM blood donations brings more gay and bi-sexual men to donate blood they will also get the added benefit of an HIV screen that they may otherwise not have opted for on their own.
I implore President Obama to look at this outdated restriction and come up with new rules that take current medical advances into consideration.
