Christopher Columbus has been celebrated far too long; he did not “discover” America. He found the home of millions of indigenous peoples and proceeded to murder, rob, and enslave those peoples. A national holiday in his honor is no more than a celebration of the genocide. It’s time for America to learn the truth and celebrate the people who walked across the land bridge from Siberia to Alaska and truly discovered this land.
Centuries have passed and American students are still not being taught the true history of the United States. This must end, now. There is no room in the 21st century to protect the ego of invading Europeans. It is necessary to eliminate the bias from history, leaving only the harsh reality of what Columbus brought to the Americas: religion, disease, and dissemination.
