The time to end circulation of the penny was long ago. Nothing can be bought for a penny and this has been the case for a long time. A penny is so worthless, many cash transactions probably round to the nickel anyway. The loudest voice against this change would likely be zinc producers. Claims that prices would rise are far overblown. Prices are rising anyway due to inflation and devalution of the US currency far more than the loss of the penny could possible incur. If a coin costs more to produce than its actually worth, that is a good criteria for determining said coin is not worth circulating. This seems like common sense (no pun intended). At a minimum our government could sponsor some independent research to investigate the impact of removing the penny from circulation.
