Christopher Columbus is finally being recognized for what he was: an inept, murderous slaver. Also, he didn't discover anything. He should not be celebrated in any shape or form.
We would best be served by replacing Columbus Day with Election Day as a federal holiday. Doing so would boost election participation and encourage people to exercise their civic duty. It would also allow people that can't take time off of work to vote.
And finally, what was once called Columbus Day, should be renamed to Indigenous Peoples' Day to celebrate the Native Americans that inhabited the Americas well before Columbus ever landed.
