Everything we were taught in school about how our government works was wrong. Public support for a given idea should determine if it should be addressed or even if it should become law, but that's not the way it works. A study from Princeton states."The preference of the average american appears to have only a minuscule near-zero statistically non-significant impact upon public policy" but this statement only reflects the bottom 90% of income earners in america. The "Elite" being the top 10% of income earners, like people that can afford lobbyist, have a much larger effect on what issues are addressed or even what laws are passed or voted down. Currently it is perfectly legal for lobbyist to "donate" to a public official's party/campaign fund and in return the official pushes their agenda.
