While we have failed to enact any progressive taxes on the rich, regressive taxes have been raised to the breaking point. The 2009 tobacco tax increase of 2400% was a target tax aimed at those who are the poorest and least able to defend themselves in our country. The poor are currently paying more than half their income in new regressive taxes when combined state and federal issues are combined. At a time when gasoline prices and inflation are out of control, people who have nothing should not be the only ones financing the healthcare of the middle class and the rich.
