The War On Drugs is a failed policy that has lead the U.S. to the highest incarceration rate per capita in the world. Jeffrey Miron of Harvard University estimated that the United States could save 85-90 billion dollars per year by legalizing drugs. Our tax money should not be used on imprisoning our citizens when better alternatives exist. The PEW Research Center showed that it costs an average of $30,000 a year to incarcerate an inmate whereas we spend only $11,665 on a public school student. It has been shown in the history of our country that prohibition does not stop use, and in fact only supplies money for more dangerous criminal activities. We need to stop the War On Drugs.
