The United States pays around $20 billion per year to subsidize the production of corn, cotton, tabacco, soy, and other crops. The existence of these subsidies distorts the free market behaviour of these crops and creates undesirable effects such as the widespread use of HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) in nearly all food products produced domestically.
In particular, corn is subsidizes so greatly that it is now used in all links of our food supply chain - it is fed to cows, chickens, sheep, and other livestock, causing severe health problems in those animals (including reducing the acidity of their bile, making them vulnerable to e.coli).
It's time to end this redistribution of wealth, end the farm subsidies.
