Our current voting system is called First-Past-the-Post. This system causes our country to eventually narrow itself down to only two parties. It does not represent the citizens true interests. For example, if three political parties ran for office, two of them being left-wing parties and the third being a right-wing party, the left-wing voters would divide up their votes between the two parties. This would most likely leave the one right-wing party as the winner, even if most voters were left-wing. The Alternative voting system does away with this.
