As your administration has claimed to be bringing an end to the war on terrorism and war footing in general, military-grade weapons, vehicles, and other equipment that were meant for combat have increasingly found their way into the hands of police departments across the country. At a time when crime is at its lowest levels in decades, do police really need to be getting more deadly equipment? Couple this with recent high-profile cases of excessive and disproportionate force by police against non-violent, unarmed suspects and even families, and the possession of these weapons makes even less sense. As the unrest in Ferguson, MO has shown, police departments are using this equipment to violently and disproportionately crack down on American citizens, and African Americans in particular.
