As I recall gun free zones were created in an effort to keep drug dealers, whom the government believed often wore guns, out of particular areas where kids were found. Such as school zone. The thinking was that this would deter the drug dealer from entering the area to do business. Keeping our kids safe. In doing so, they created an area where anyone caught with a gun, good or bad, could then be charged. This of course ensures that most folks within these gun free zones has no gun.
