The tragic death of 11 year old Ashlynne Mike of the Navajo Nation has brought national attention to an issue that has been epidemic for centuries; the abuse and exploitation of Indigenous Women and Children. This abuse began with colonialist invasion and never left. The abuse and exploitation of Native women and children became so pervasive, it became part of tribal culture. Many tribes have long forgotten their matriarchal roots; roots that taught a way that honored and respected all.
A perfect example of this is the way that women are treated in the Tribe of Santa Clara Pueblo. If your mother was the Santa Clara Tribal member, your tribal enrollment is not valid and your land can be taken from you. If a woman stands her ground and speaks up for her rights, she will pay dearly.
