In response to the dangers that its drivers face on a daily basis from its clientele, tech giant Uber engineered a solution to ensure the safety of the individuals who have literally driven the company’s success: a bop-it. Despite the fact that an analysis of Bureau of Labor statistics data published on August 11, 2016 reveals Taxi driving is one of the most dangerous jobs in the United States, The Guardian on January 26, 2016 reveals that Uber’s solution to recent incidents of customers attacking drivers is to place a 90s kid’s toy in the back of the car. Uber, however, is not alone, in its use of independent contracting status to cut costs and avoid liabilities for its workers. The administration must explain what actions are being taken to curb this practice and prevent this abuse.
