The CHIMP Act passed in 2000 places a total spending cap on the amount of money the National Institutes of Health can spend on chimp sanctuaries for retiring research chimps. The NIH will reach this limit in July.
The NIH currently has almost 700 chimps, many of which will retire very soon.
Because of the CHIMP Act limits on spending on sanctuaries, these retired chimps may be forced to spend the rest of their lives in labs (where they will be kept but not be used in research).
Keeping the retired chimps in the lab costs about the same amount of money as sending them to a sanctuary, like Chimp Haven or Save the Chimps.
Please end the senseless restriction on sanctuary spending, which does not save any tax payer money.
