Many Health Insurance companies require patients who take expensive medications (ie. cancer, multiple sclerosis drugs) to receive them from mail order pharmacies. These prescriptions must travel over long distances that can compromise the viability of refrigerated meds, and often need to be signed for thus creating a "hostage situation" requiring the receiver to be available . Mail order mistakes are prevalent. Deliveries are often the wrong medication, late arrivals, or lost en route causing a potentially harmful (and stressful) situation for the recipient. It should be the right of the insured to be able to choose a relationship with a local pharmacy, and the freedom to pick up their prescriptions at their own discretion. Mandatory mail order often only benefits the insurance company.
