We the People ask President Barack Obama to continue his environmental promise and end the practice of Mountain Top Removal (MTR). We ask this for the following reasons:
-MTR releases toxic chemicals into our rivers and destroys our national heritage. The practice of MTR is hazardous to public health.
- MRT damages communities by polarizing citizens against each other.
-MTR damages regional employment. West Virginia has lost over 100,000 mining jobs since 1948, yet coal extraction has risen.
Coal River Mountain in West Virginia is currently planned for MTR, even though it has significant wind power potential. By prohibiting MTR and encouraging wind power it would set a precedent for the rest of the region. We ask to use this opportunity as a turning point for clean domestic energy.
